Monash University Sport Awards

 until the 47th Sport Awards!

What are the Monash University Sport Awards?

Known previously as the Blues awards, the Monash Sport Awards is in its 47th year of celebrating sporting achievement at Monash University.

'Blues' are the University’s highest and most prestigious sporting awards. They are presented annually to Monash students who demonstrate outstanding sporting performance. 'Sport Awards' are awarded for outstanding contributions to the participation and administration of sport at the University. Monash Sport Awards include Male and Female Athlete of the year; Team of the Year; Club of the Year; Volunteer of the Year; Sport Manager of the Year; Club of the Year and Club Person of the Year and ‘TeamMONASH™ Champion’.

In 2009 Monash University successfully hosted its 46th Annual Sport Awards as held at the Clayton campus. In addition to the 10 Sport awards that were presented to Monash's outstanding athletes, coaches and volunteers, 38 students were awarded the Universitys highest sporting honour that can be bestowed on a student - a Sport Blue Award.

The annual Monash Sport Awards also includes the induction of past students into the Monash Sport Hall of Fame. On this night of University sporting nights the 19th inductee into the Monash University Sport Hall of Fame Chris Dane QC  was welcomed into an illustrious group including John Bertrand, Paul McNamee and Lauren Hewitt.

In addition Pr Rob Willis who presided over the ceremonial duties on behalf of the VC Prof Ed Byrne received a gift of an Oar from the outstanding Monash University 1989 Mens Eight Rowing team which we understand is the university's first memorabilia of this nature.

The annual Sport Awards Dinner always proves to be a fantastic evening with guest speakers, fun and interesting presentations, camaraderie and a fantastic celebration of the year’s sport at Monash University.

Blues Awards history

In 1829 the first rowing race between Oxford and Cambridge Universities was held on the River Thames from Hambleden Lock to Henly Bridges. As both crews had no distinctive uniform to identify them, just before the start, a Cambridge rower tied a light blue scarf to bow of his boat and his Oxford counterpart tied a dark blue scarf to his. Thus began a tradition and a basis for the award of Blues for outstanding achievement in university sport, a tradition adopted by English-speaking universities in many parts of the world.

Blues Awards were first given at Monash University in 1963 where 25 students were recognised for their achievements in AFL, badminton, basketball, boxing, fencing, hockey, judo and squash.
